What to Consider Before Moving to a 55+ Community

But before you sell your house and take that leap, there are several things to consider:

Healthcare Availability

Some 55+ communities have on-site healthcare facilities and some don’t. Always check for healthcare availability around the area. No matter the current state of your health, it’s always better to have proper medical care nearby in case an emergency arises.

Lifestyle and Activities

Moving to a 55+ community ensures that you will be in the company of people in your same age group with similar experiences. This setup makes it easier for a lot of retirees to socialize and make new friends.

With so many retirement communities to choose from, it’s important that you find one which suits your needs and pleasures perfectly. Different communities offer their own blend of amenities and you can choose from a variety of types:

  • Active Lifestyle Communities
  • Active lifestyle or active adult communities offer a variety of homes from single-family residences or townhouses to multi-family housing. Residents in these communities can enjoy a host of amenities like a clubhouse, golf course, fitness and hobby centers, walking trails, and many other recreational spaces. These communities also offer its residents different clubs or programs that encourage them to socialize more.

These communities have two classifications: age-restricted and age-targeted. Age-restricted communities are aimed specifically at people aged 55 and over. Those under the age of 19 are not allowed to be permanent residents in these communities. Age-targeted communities, on the other hand, are geared toward but not exclusive to those aged 55 and above.

  • Independent Living Communities
  • Independent living communities are age-restricted communities that offer apartment or multi-family rental living. These communities provide common areas for residents to socialize and come with dining services, housekeeping, transportation services, and recreational activities.

  • Continuing Care Retirement Communities
  • With services like meal preparation, transportation to medical appointments, and in-home medical care, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) are ideal for those who require more medical attention. All CCRCs offer apartment-style living while some are fashioned in a campus-like setting and offer individual homes.

While you’re looking around, it is recommended to ask members of the community on what they think of the area to get a better idea of what it has in store. Moreover, a real estate agent who has a thorough knowledge of the location will be able to paint a clear picture of the community culture in your preferred area.

Look for a community where you can find everything you need for an enjoyable retirement.
