A brief history of Castle Rock
Originally inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne people, the area where Castle Rock now stands attracted European settlers who came to find gold and own land under the Homestead Act of 1864. Instead of gold, the settlers found precious rhyolite stone – a discovery that led to the birth and growth of Castle Rock.
The first streets of Castle Rock were created in 1874. A train depot constructed a year later became a center for trading and for transporting rhyolite and ranching supplies.
From that time forward, Castle Rock has enjoyed continuous growth and progress. This is especially evident in the last few decades when the town’s population grew from just over 3,900 in the 1980s to around 60,000 today, making it the largest municipality in Douglas County.
